Terms of service
The rules for using Listen Along, in plain language and no longer than it needs to be. Last updated 1 November 2026.
The short version
- Listen Along is free, and it is one person's side project. It may break, change or go away.
- Music plays from YouTube on your own device. We never host or re-stream audio, and YouTube's own terms apply while you listen.
- Be decent to the people in the room. Harassment, hate and spam get you removed.
- Don't record the people you are talking to without asking them.
- You can stop any time. So can we, if you break the rules above.
Using Listen Along means you accept these terms and the Privacy Policy. If you don't, don't use it.
What Listen Along is
Listen Along puts you and your friends in a room, playing the same track at the same second, in a small 2D world you can walk around. It is a personal side project run by one person, offered free of charge.
That means there is no uptime promise, no support contract and no guarantee that a feature you like today will be here next month. Rooms can go down mid-song, sync can drift on a bad connection, and the whole thing may one day be switched off. If any of that would be a problem for you, treat Listen Along as a toy rather than infrastructure.
Accounts and guests
- You can join as a guest with just a nickname, or sign in with Google or Discord to keep an account between visits.
- You must be 13 or older to use Listen Along.
- You are responsible for what happens under your account, including anything queued, said or typed from it. Don't share your sign-in, and don't use someone else's.
- Don't impersonate someone else in your nickname or display name, and don't pick one designed to harass another person.
- Don't create accounts to get around a room ban or a removal from the service.
Music and playback
You queue a track by giving us a link. Listen Along resolves it and your browser plays it from YouTube, through YouTube's own embedded player. We never host, copy, record or re-stream audio, and we are not a music service.
- Because playback happens in YouTube's player, the YouTube Terms of Service apply to you while you listen. Don't use Listen Along to do anything those terms forbid, including downloading or capturing the stream.
- Only queue links you are allowed to share. Don't use a room as a commercial broadcast, a public performance for a venue, or a way to distribute material you have no right to.
- Tracks go missing, get region-locked or get taken down at the source. That is outside our control and is not a fault in Listen Along.
How to behave in a room
A room is a shared space. Don't do any of this in one:
- Harassment, threats, hate speech, or targeting someone over who they are.
- Sexual content involving minors, in any form. This gets reported, not just removed.
- Sharing someone's private information, or recordings of them, without consent.
- Spam, scams, phishing links, or advertising in chat.
- Deliberately ruining the room — queue flooding, abusing skip votes, or exploiting a bug to take over playback.
- Automated access, scraping, load testing, or attacking the sync, voice or realtime servers.
- Trying to break the app's security: forging tokens, reading other people's rooms, or getting around a private room's password.
Room owners and moderation
Whoever creates a room runs it. Owners set the room's name, whether it is public or private, its size, its queue limit and its skip threshold, and they can remove or ban someone from their room for a while.
We don't moderate every room — there is one of us. Most of what happens in a room is handled by the people in it, through skip votes and the owner's own controls. We step in when something reported to us breaks the rules above, and when we do we may remove a room, a playlist or an account without notice.
Report anything serious to listenalonghere@gmail.com with the room code and roughly when it happened.
Voice chat
Proximity voice is a live relay: your microphone reaches the people whose avatars are near yours, and nothing is recorded or stored on our side. Your microphone is never on until you turn it on.
Recording or transcribing the people you are talking to without telling them is not allowed here, and depending on where you live it may also be illegal. Ask first.
Your content
Your nickname, your avatar, your playlists, your chat messages and whatever you say on voice stay yours. You give us only the permission needed to run the service: to show your nickname and avatar to the people in your rooms, to relay your messages and voice to them, and to store your playlists so you can use them again.
We claim nothing beyond that. We don't license your content to anyone else, and we don't use it to train anything.
Copyright complaints
Listen Along hosts no audio, so a complaint about a recording itself belongs with YouTube, where the file actually lives. What we can act on is this service: if a room, playlist or room name infringes your rights, email listenalonghere@gmail.com with the link, what the material is, and a statement that you are the rights holder or are acting for them. We will remove it if the complaint holds up.
Ending access
You can stop using Listen Along whenever you like, and you can have your account deleted by asking — see deleting your data.
We may suspend or delete an account, or remove a room, if it breaks these terms, if it puts other people at risk, or if it threatens the service itself. For anything less serious we will try to say what went wrong first. If we shut Listen Along down for good, we will give what notice we reasonably can.
No warranty
Listen Along is provided as is, with no warranty of any kind. We don't promise it will be available, that playback will stay in sync, that voice chat will connect, that a track will be playable, or that your playlists and rooms will survive. Back up anything you would miss.
Liability
To the fullest extent the law allows, we are not liable for indirect or consequential loss arising from your use of Listen Along — lost data, lost time, a ruined listening party, or anything another person does in a room. Nothing here limits liability that cannot legally be limited, such as for death, personal injury or fraud caused by us.
Listen Along costs nothing, and our total liability to you is limited accordingly.
Changes to these terms
These terms can change as the app does. The date at the top says when they last did, and a change worth noticing will be announced in the app rather than slipped in quietly. Carrying on using Listen Along after a change means you accept the new terms.
Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws of India, where the operator of Listen Along is based, and any dispute belongs in the courts there. If a clause here turns out to be unenforceable, the rest still stands.
