A JQBX alternative for listening together

Synced rooms, a shared queue and a world you can walk around — without a Spotify Premium subscription.

What JQBX was

JQBX put you in a room with other people and played Spotify through everyone's own account at the same time. One person picked, everyone heard it, and the chat ran alongside. The catch was the thing it was built on: every listener needed their own Spotify Premium subscription, because that was the only way the playback was legal.

What people actually miss about it

Most people searching for a JQBX alternative want two things back: a room where everyone genuinely hears the same moment, and a queue the whole room can add to. The Premium requirement is usually the part they are glad to leave behind.

Is JQBX still around?

Public company records list JQBX as closed, and note it was acquired by Turntable Labs. In 2022 its own users were being pointed to other services. When we last checked, the jqbx.fm domain no longer served a music product at all — it returned a placeholder page of a single line of text. We have not found an official shutdown announcement with a date, so treat the exact timing as unconfirmed.

Status last checked October 2026. We would rather hedge than tell you a service is dead when it is not — if this is out of date, tell us.

Common questions

Is JQBX still running?

Public records list it as closed and acquired by Turntable Labs, and its users were directed elsewhere in 2022. We could not find an official announcement with an exact date, so we describe it as closed rather than claiming a specific shutdown day. If it is back, we would like to know.

Do I need Spotify Premium to use Listen Along?

No. You do not need Spotify at all. Playback runs through YouTube, so nobody in the room needs a paid subscription. You can still paste a Spotify or Apple Music link and we will look up the matching track.

Can I keep using my Spotify playlists?

You can paste individual Spotify track links and we resolve them. Spotify does not allow third-party apps to stream its catalogue directly, which is the same restriction that shaped JQBX, so the actual audio plays from YouTube.

Does everyone really hear the same moment?

Yes. The room itself holds the playback position, and each client seeks to it, so a person joining halfway through a song drops in at the right second rather than starting it over.

Start a room in about ten seconds

No download, no subscription, and nobody needs an account to listen in a room you share with them.
